Uganda: Iryn Namubiru Scoops Diva of the Year Award
THIS year's Afrika Diva Music Awards (ADMA) gala held at Theatre LaBonita in Kampala last Saturday ended with Iryn Namubiru as the night's big winner. The awards exclusively recognise female artistes.
Iryn was named Diva of the Year. Unlike last year's awards, this time the award does not come with sh5m prize money. It is only an accolade. The jovial Begombeko singer, who also holds this year's PAM Award's Female Artiste of the Year was a clear crowd favourite.
She beat equally feisty singers, Grace Nakimera; Jackie Chandiru, Cindy and Juliana Kanyomozi.
Accompanied by her manager, the excited Iryn picked her plaque from Gen. Elly Tumwine, who was among the VIPs and also artistes who performed that night.
The red carpet ceremony kicked off at 7:00pm and ended just before midnight with Namubiru's crowning. City Rock singers, who had just been crowned New Divas' Group of the Year, showed the crowd why they deserved the accolade when they put on a thrilling act.
Unlike last year, this time most artistes picked up their plaques in person. Iryn Namubiru, was nominated in four categories and successfully won two. She was a nominee for the Diva of the year 2010; her Begombeko track was lined up for Afro Beat Diva 2010 and Diva song of the Year 2010. She also appeared for the Diva Collaboration of the year 2010 with Sweet Kid.
Juliana Kanyomozi who was up for two nominations; Diva of the year while her Kantambule Nawe that battled it out with Jackie Chandiru's Agassi, HB Toxic's Going Out Tonite and Angella Katatumba's Let Me for the R&B Diva 2010 Award.
Upcoming artistes like Margla favourably competed with established artistes like Desire Luzinda in the nominations. Desire's Kabite only appeared in Afro Beat 2010 while Margla appeared in New Diva of the Year, Reggae/Ragga Diva 2010, Tinku's track also appeared for Video of the Year. She won Reggae Ragga.
Bebe Cool's wife Zuena who appeared on the nominations list courtesy of her collaboration song, Amata with Eighton and Rain had stiff competition from the likes of Chameleone and Chandiru - Going On and Chameleone and Nabbi - Yantuma, but lost it to Jack Chandiru.
This year's Diva Awards coincided with the audience's expectations. Every time the emcees announced the winners, the crowd cheered in appreciation.
The only glitch was when the emcees gave Iryn Namubiru an accolade for the best R&B Diva which was not rightly hers. They, however, later realised their mistake, recalled it and gave it to the right winner, Juliana Kanyomozi.
