Rabadaba’s draws crowds amid hitches

The October 29 Rabadaba Musanvu Kitundu album launch at Kati Kati did not flop, that’s for sure.
Kati Kati has not had such a full house since before the July 11 bomb blasts. Not even Bobi Wine in launching his Mr Money album got a crowd this big.Musanvu Kitundu was a successful show in terms of numbers. It lived up to the billing as one of the most highly anticipated album launches and UG Records is on its way as an events organiser.
But there is a ‘but’. Musanvu Kitundu was no ‘Michael Jackson show in Africa’ as Rabadaba and his management had promised, and this is a damning precedent. Let’s get the bad stuff out of the way first. Rabadaba came on stage at 11:40pm. Who still does that? Yes, the show was tagged Musanvu Kitundu, but still, really? This, in spite of the fact that Rabadaba had promised in a pre-album launch interview he would not be hitting the stage so late because he is “not a one hit wonder.”
Then there was Events Warehouse’s poor sound let down. It got so bad that Rabadaba had to continually interrupt himself mid song to ask for a better microphone. The Big Five band sound was lost and for the first time Big Tym, who did Sofia with Rabadaba, did not sound good at all. There was also a moment in there, when Rabadaba went off stage to freshen up and that had many revellers wondering if they had paid for a two in one album launch.
This was after doing Side Dish with Cindy, Rabadaba left the stage to Cindy who raced through all her major song releases. Never have Cindy alone on your stage – or any other artiste for that matter – when it is your album launch. Get our professional comedians to give the audience the commercial break you need to prep yourself backstage before you come back on.
That was the bad stuff.
Everyone might have been waiting for Rabadaba to perform his Bwekiri (which was actually his opening salvo), Mukyamu, and Olunyiriri. But I think Rabadaba won new, more discerning fans, by exposing them to music from his Spontaneous days.
Ye Gwe and Byanema (Omukwano gwa ssente) had the crowd singing along in obvious enjoyment. He was as energetic in performing these songs as he was in getting crowd interaction on his recognised hits. Making us all appreciate that the talent that is Rabadaba was always there, his time had just not come then.
Apart from giving Big Tym significant time as one of the curtain raisers (those boys rock!), surely someone should give comedian Afande Kerere, formerly of Amarula some MC gigs. He had the crowd clutching their ribs from his ‘silly’ jokes.
But it was Rabadaba we had come to see, and he can be forgiven for coming on so late because he left even later – the show ended a few minutes past 1am. So suddenly, that the crowd remained staring at the stage for a few minutes, unable to believe it was all over.
