Uganda: Raba Daba Scored On All Fronts

POSTED 30th/October/2010views:462

Kampala — GOING into Raba Daba's maiden solo concert at the Kati Kati grounds last Friday, the major question was whether the 'Luga-Ragga king' would be able to attract a sizeable crowd - given that he has enjoyed only one year among the elite of the local music industry.

However, if attendance was his test, Raba Daba scored excellently. He had one of the largest crowds we have seen at Kati Kati for a music concert, with both the VIP and ordinary sections overflowing.

You wondered whether his fans would have fitted in Kati Kati had secondary school students been on holiday - he enjoys an inimitable popularity among them, you know?

Now, having managed to attract an enormous crowd, the singer also did not disappoint. Over an hour, he spiritedly sang them all the successful songs he has ever produced.

Think of Mukyamu, Bwekiri, Silubala, Nkyusa Olunyiriri, Searching, Ndi Mubi, in addition to some obscure ones from his earliest days in the music industry.

Delivering his raw voice without recorded support in the background, and backed by a live band (which surprisingly did not kill his hard-to-play dancehall beats), he performed with the usual passion that makes him interesting to watch.

And the crowd, which primarily comprised the younger age group, sang along, danced and cheered him on, painting an animated vista.

The outstanding disappointment came on the side of the artistes who turned up to support him. They were so few, so the crowd was denied variety. Even Radio and Weasel, with whom Raba Daba has worked on a number of songs, were a no show.

Nonetheless, the few: Cindy, GNL Zamba, Jamal Wasswa, Aziz Azion, AK-47 and Michael Ross among other, did a remarkable job - Cindy and GNL Zamba particularly giving priceless gigs.

On the whole, it was value for money for the fans, and a big score attained for Raba Daba.

You might also say Ugandans have fully woken up from the bomb scares to attend music concerts in droves - this was the third concert they attended in big numbers after those of Bobi Wine and Aziz Azion a few weeks ago.
