Norway Ambassador, STL fails to reach Eurovison finals

Stella Mwangi popularly known as, STL won the Norwegian Melodi Grand Prix final held in Oslo Spectrum in February. By winning the Norwegian final, she automatically qualified to represent Norway in the final to be held in Germany in May. When Stella Mwangi’s song Haba Haba was chosen in this year’s Norwegian Melodi Grand Prix final, eye bows were raised. This was a controversial choice simply because for many the song did not reflect Norwegian music culture but showcased Africa. Despite the critcism, “Haba Haba” was one of the hot favourites from the very beginning, clouding the Norwegian airwaves and topping the local charts. “Haba Haba” defied the odds becoming an instant hit because of the positive message of the song, its simplicity and its catchy tune made “Haba Haba” irresistible.

Last Tuesday the first leg of the semi-finals of the contest was held n Dusseldorf, Germany. STL who was representing Norway, battled it out with representatives from nineteen different countries. Some of these countries included traditional favourites like Serbia, Russia, Greece and Azerbaijan. Although the Kenyan born singer had a stellar performance, she failed to win over European hearts as “Haba Haba” failed to make it to the Eurovision finals held on Saturday in the same city. When interviewed in Dusseldorf before the finals, the Adidas Ambassador for Norway said it would not be the end of the world if she did not make it to the finals. Although it was not a prerequisite for the contest, STL’s “Haba Haba” was arguably the best produced video in the Eurovison contest. Her exit from the contest meant that Norway was out of the Eurovison finals.
