Mr. Drama, Chameleone!

Self proclaimed heavy weight champion, controversial musician Joseph Mayanja also known as, Jose Cha 000 000 is no stranger to drama. The star recently converted to Islam and quickly “backslid” to Christianity in a space of 48 hours.  A Kibuli Mosque sheik Sekimpi said that the sole reason he “backlsid” is because of all the pressure from his family and friends. The sheik said that he intimated to Chameleone that the first days would be tough and that the Leone Island star had anticipated all of this but could not handle the pressure.

The Catholic Church says Chameleone has to denounce his new found Islam faith, go for some Catechism classes and perform the sacrament of penance before he can be allowed back. Chameleone said he will publicly denounce Islam if asked to.

The plot thickens, the skin hardens and the drama continues. After the dust settled from Chameleone’s religious dilemma, the focus shifted to Chameleone’s skin, a peculiar subject. I met Chameleone over 8 years ago and one thing i could testify to was the bad nature of the skin: It was spotted, not evenly toned and had notable green spots. Why is this subject being brought up now? Why the sudden concern? Although i would understand a fan’s genuine concern because i was genuinely concerned years ago, it does not take a rocket scientist to figure out why the subject is being brought up after his album launch and before his upcoming tour.

 Chameleone’s rock star lifestyle, party animal character, drama filled life and abundant African fans have attracted him a lot of envy both locally and abroad. Onlookers may argue that the bad publicity is pay back for the toes he has arrogantly stepped on in his musical journey.

“Basima Ogenze”, one of Chameleone’s biggest tracks loosely translates, “They shower you with praise when you are dead”. A toast to Jose Chameleone! He redefined the Ugandan music industry, stamping it with his imprint of ingenuity, quality and professionalism. He also set the benchmark of how much a professional Ugandan artiste should be paid at a show. Although he might not live an exemplary life off stage and outside the studio, he is one of the most professional artistes to hit the Ugandan scene and the quality of the music tells it all.
