The First Grader is KIFF’s best feature film

The Sixth edition of the Kenya International Film Festivals (KIFF), 2011 came to a close in splendor with The First Grader scooping an award for the best feature film.

Oliver Litondo, who starred in the film scooped an award for the best actor while the best actress prize went to Naomi Harris who starred as Mzee Maruge’s head teacher.

Speaking at the award ceremony, Litondo reiterated that The First Grader was a Kenyan film despite many critics saying the film had a foreign feel. He said , “the making of ‘The First Grader’ employed many Kenyans all who helped in shaping the film”.

This is the first time The First Grader has been screened in Kenya for the public. Another winner was The Boxer a film directed by Michael Ilako, which bagged the best film in the student category. The Team directed by Patrick Reed got the award for best documentary.

Charles Asiba, the festival's director while speaking during the closing ceremony stated that KIFF had achieved its goal of screening 365 films during the ten day screening festivals.

He said, “ We are very impressed that Kenyans are beginning to appreciate film and are indeed taking a keen interest in creating their own films”. This year’s film festivals received a record 435 films from all over the world and in various genres.

The highlight of the film festivals however, was the interactive session with literary giant Wole Soyinka. Film makers, professors and lecturers as well as film lovers got to interact with Wole one on one.
