Kampala, Uganda

Peter Miles and Juliana are two music artists that have stayed long on Uganda's music scene. They now have a collaboration titled, Oja. It’s a new hit in the Matatus. I caught up with Peter Miles, and had a brief chat.

Hillary Muheebwa: What’s the meaning of your new song, Oja?

Peter Miles: Waiting for some one in vain, as in two love birds waiting for each other.

HM: What made you to feature Juliana?

PM: We've always wanted to work together for a very long time and I guess this was the right time, and besides I find her very talented and we've been in the industry for a while now.

HM: You have maintained such longevity on the Ugandan music scene?

PM: I do what comes from my inner side so I follow my hearts desire and creation—I create what I feel is lacking.

HM: Across the region, what do you think differentiates Ugandan music from music of other countries, say bongo flava or lingala?

PM: Ugandan music is based on groovy dance beats and relates to the local's day-to-day life and has more musical transitions, while bongo flava is more of rap.

HM: Over the years, we have seen many Ugandan artists hit one or two songs, then disappear. Why do you think that is?

PM: They usually copy what’s on the commercial market and has already been done by other established artists—plus, they lack focus.

HM: In which music category would you place the song, Oja?

PM: It’s definitely a dancehall song, you can hear from the beats and the vibe.

HM: And how do you describe the taste of music for most Ugandans?

PM: Ugandans enjoy club bangers songs with a dance groove. So anything with that they'll enjoy.

HM: Yeah, that is definitely true. Let me ask you, where do you think is your biggest fan base lies? Who is your audience?

PM: Mainly the youth because they relate to my hard dancehall vibe and

lyrics, although I do get the older generation appreciating too.

HM: I have seen a few older people listening to your music, so I can attest to that. And how did you come up with the song, oja?

PM: Sometimes the vibe just sets in. I thought of the idea, called up Juliana, we ran through it, she was excited and liked the idea, we hit the studio and recorded it in about 30 minutes.

HM: Wow! That is amazing – only 30 minutes!!!! Is Oja, off an album, or is it only a single?

PM: It’s on my latest local album I usually let the people choose what they want the album title to be. It has other songs like "Nkusaleko","Mukwano Olimba", and others yet to be released.

PM: I produced and mastered the track from my Roadblock Production Studio.

HM: How would you rate the growth of your music career?

PM: It’s been quite a success from meeting international music icons to performing at international events, winning various awards home and away, endorsements, driving dream cars and building dream homes the list is endless but the road goes on, there's alot more to be achieved.

Reporter’s note: Peter promised us that the full album has more interesting tunes…and we’ll be the first to know! WATCH OUT FOR IT!
